LAND – Paintings by Bryony Matthew
Letham Gallery solo exhibition 2007
Travelling across the surface of the land, collecting memories and images.
Working in oil on board, and also mixed media on canvas, Bryony Matthew explores New Zealand’s diverse landscape. Images gathered while exploring NZ by road, sea and track over many years have built a memory bank of light, colour and form which is the basis for her work.
With a background in photography through her involvement in film, Bryony brings this knowledge to her painting. Her drawing process often begins with photographs of landscape, shot from moving vehicles with slow shutter speeds. Movement and motion blur are interesting representations of memorys’ haze.
An interest in many media is hinted at in the small collage works.
