ROOM TO BREATHE – Paintings by Bryony Matthew
Letham Gallery solo exhibition 2011
Travelling across the surface of the land, collecting memories and images.
I have been exploring a systematic language of painted and drawn marks, choosing to limit each composition to 3 or 4 marks. Landscape is an element, as is the memory of landscape.
road………sea……….and track………..
The passing blur of images out a car window, the subtle greens of a dripping bush track, and a shoreline as experienced from the sea, ….
With a background in photography through her involvment in film, Bryony brings this knowledge to her painting. Movement and motion blur are interesting representaions of memorys’ haze.
Travel in Asia has informed my art practice, simplicity, and contemplation are part of mark making. .
However , the simple pleasures of gesture and paint and composition hold sway here too.
This is Bryony’s second solo exhibition at the Letham Gallery.
