Artist Statement: Liquid Unbounded Mark 2024

Desaturated colour inhabits  the raw canvas and wood, 

each liquid unbounded mark staining the intentionally unsullied surface.  

I draw on the schools of Colour Field, minimalism, and  action painting in these abstract paintings where the palette is a distillation of light on water and land.

The techniques and language of marks that live within this series istightly controlled, formal and specific,

Creating a tension between the unknown

and the studied.

The ‘space between’ is valued.

Edge tension is an ongoing reference point, and

Marks are

An intentional act

Coming from a feeling of openness and precipice dwelling,

Which dictate each moment of making.

Calm falls on me, the world falls away,

The inner dialogue pauses.

The moment of making the mark is full of trust,

As is the moment of stepping away from the painting,

To leave the mark unfixed, unaltered.

It’s thru limitations, that space can be ‘felt’ rather than explicitly drawn.
